  • Programs of 8 to 24 months: PGWP will be issued corresponding to the duration of the study.
  • Programs of 2 years or more: PGWP will be issued for a maximum of 3 years.
  • Completing multiple programs: PGWP duration will be accumulated from eligible programs, provided that each course must last at least 8 months.

Programs of less than 8 months: Not eligible for PGWP.
Programs of 8 months or more: Students will be granted a post-graduation work permit to Canada for up to 3 years even if the course only lasts 2 years.
Important changes to PGWP in 2025
The Canadian government has announced some major adjustments to the PGWP policy, aiming to prioritize occupations with labor shortages and direct students to essential fields:

No limit on fields of study (currently applicable): Students in all fields can apply for PGWP.
From January 2025, priority will be given to PGWP students in the following fields:

  • Health and Healthcare
  • Information Technology
  • Engineering & Skilled Trades
  • Applied Science (STEM)
  • Agriculture - Food
  • Education - Training

Occupations not on the priority list may have more difficulty applying for PGWP (limited quota, additional requirements).
Students who want to extend their PGWP after the first year may need to provide a job offer from an occupation on the priority list.
The new policy does not apply retroactively: Students who are studying will not be affected if they started their program before the policy takes effect.
Notes on Canada's PGWP
Keep up with the latest policy: As changes to English language requirements, priority fields of study, and PGWP extension conditions are constantly being updated.

Plan your studies early: Choose a field of study that is in line with Canadian labor trends to increase your chances of staying and working and settling.
Take advantage of your time after graduation: Accumulating work experience in Canada will be a big advantage for your future immigration application.

The 2025 updates to Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit program mark a significant shift in the country’s approach to international student immigration.

By adding 119 new fields of study, removing 178 others, and maintaining a list of 929 eligible programs, Canada is prioritizing sectors like health care, education, and skilled trades to address long-term labour shortages.

For international students, these changes offer both opportunities and challenges, requiring careful planning to ensure PGWP eligibility and a clear path to permanent residency.

Whether you’re a current student, a prospective applicant, or simply interested in Canada’s immigration landscape, understanding these changes is crucial.

By choosing an eligible program, staying informed, and preparing thoroughly, international students can make the most of Canada’s world-class education system and vibrant job market.
