Centennial named one of Canada's Top Research Colleges, #1 in paid student research
Centennial College has consistently been ranked as one of the top 50 research colleges in Canada, and this year we were recognized again by Research Infosource. Notably, Centennial ranked first for paid internships in applied research and 20th for research revenue. When it comes to paid internships in applied research, we have 599 student researchers through our faculty of Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Centennial Innovates. This group leads all of the College’s applied research and is responsible for our ranking as number one for four consecutive years.
“These results are the result of an outstanding performance by a very capable team,” said Jonathan Hack, Dean of Centennial Innovates. “I couldn’t be more proud of all of our innovation leaders who go above and beyond in everything they do. Over the past few years, we have significantly expanded our research activities to include data analytics, sustainable energy systems, low-carbon transport and smart mobility, while continuing to expand our established strengths in digital healthcare technologies, social innovation research, aerospace and advanced manufacturing.”
At Centennial Innovates, student researchers develop valuable technical and professional skills by working alongside industry partners to solve real-world business challenges. And because internships are paid, students can focus on building their skills and expertise without the financial burden. Students complete their internships with an innovative mindset and a competitive edge when entering the job market. In fact, student researchers from Centennial Innovates have an extremely high success rate when it comes to getting hired, and their largest applied research centre, the Centre for Access to Mobile, Interactive and Wearable Technologies in Health (WIMTACH), even boasts a 100% graduate employment rate.
“Students are at the heart of every applied research project,” Hack added. “One of our main goals in research is to train students and give them the opportunity to work directly with industry partners to develop the skills, innovative thinking and networks to succeed in their careers after graduation. Student engagement and empowerment is one of our top priorities, and we are extremely proud to offer more paid internships to our students than any other college in Canada.”
This reflects the school’s commitment to providing students with an educational experience that prepares them for success in their future careers, as well as the fact that research projects are conducted with sustainability in mind.
“We map our entire innovation portfolio to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Hack explains, “Sustainable innovation thinking is deliberately fostered in our applied research and entrepreneurship activities. We believe that having a sustainability perspective is absolutely critical to future career success.”
